Il nome dell'ordine deriva dal mwfagreco antico κεφαλή, kephalế = testa e ἀσπίς, aspís = scudo e fa riferimento alla presenza di un processo cefalico a forma di scudo, che facilita l'interramento nel mwfqsubstrato, caratteristico di questo raggruppamento.cite-ref-ssh-2-0[2]cite-ref-ssf-3-0[3]

La mwhwconchiglia può essere ben sviluppata, mwiavestigiale, interna (p.es. mwiqmwigChelidonura spp.) o del tutto assente come in alcune specie della famiglia mwiwGastropteridae.

Il raggruppamento comprende specie mwjgerbivore, che si nutrono di mwjwdiatomee o mwkaalghe filamentose, ma anche specie mwkqcarnivore, che predano mwkgforaminiferi, piccoli mwkwmolluschi bivalvi, mwlapolicheti e anche altri mwlqgasteropodi.cite-ref-mpe2015-4-0[4]cite-ref-5[5]

I cefalaspidei hanno una mwoadistribuzione cosmopolita, con la maggiore biodiversità concentrata nelle acque tropicali e subtropicali dell'mwoqIndo-Pacifico.cite-ref-mpe2015-4-1[4]

Sono diffusi dal mwpwpiano intertidale sino alle acque profonde. La maggior parte delle specie vive su mwqasubstrati sabbiosi o fangosi, ma alcune specie vivono in associazione con mwqqpiante acquatiche, mwqgalghe, mwqwcoralli e mwraspugne.
